Beginning February of 2018, 6th grade students at IS 51 collaborated to design the top and benches of a Lunch Room Table with an anti-bullying message. Their statement of “Being Accepted” stressed how concerned they are about racial equality and the pervasive practice of negative stereotypes. The table was displayed June 5th, 2018 at Union Square, along with other designs by several schools throughout New York City.
The table designed by IS51 students was on display June 13th at Clove Lakes Park, Staten Island for part of the Summer. The Parks Department has anchored the legs of the table and made it available for public use.
